Animal Mother of the year? - Catherine - 12-08-2014

I was reading about an amphibian, the caecilian and found that their maternal behaviour goes beyond anything I have ever heard before.

The mother grows an extra layer of skin for her babies to rip off and eat as their first meal. Then they rest while she grows back another layer of skin so the babies can do it again.

That is maternal dedication!

I have never seen anything like it. Is there anything a mother wouldn't do?

Wow, that's interesting. When you think of it, all mothers give their own bodies to their young, but not in such a dramatic way as this.

I have never heard of anything like this before. It can't be too common. Of course caecilian are not too common anyhow.
