Non Human Rights Project - Catherine - 05-28-2015

A rescue group is trying to free two Chimpanzees from a lab at Stony Brook University. A judge issued a writ of habeas corpus for the two chimps, but later amended it. However the case is not going to disappear.
We are starting to see that certain animals have intelligence and therefore deserve some kind of legal protection and status under the law. It is not clear what that status will be, but they will gain legal protection.

This is a case to watch.

You were faster than I was, Catherine. I found this article yesterday, but didn't have time to start a thread:

There are some interesting historical precedents in the BBC article.

Thank you Catherine. I will keep an eye on this. I hope those Chimpanzees get some justice, and that will eventually open the door to rights for all animals.

It is not often I get to an article first since I am time zone challenged.

The BBC article is good. Some of the historical material has implications. If they put a pig on trial they are saying the pig has moral culpability for a crime.

If animals have no rights and no understanding, then they can't be charged with crimes. If they can be charged then we are saying they are capable of understanding right and wrong. We can't have it both ways.

This is a case to watch and I do hope these two chimps get some justice and freedom.
