Saints shelter for older pets - Catherine - 11-28-2015

The Vancouver area has a very special shelter. Saints shelter is a sanctuary for older unwanted pets. They get the animals from other shelters when it is clear the old pet won't be finding a home. They get them form vets and drop offs. However it happens they have taken in many old pets that would have no where to go.
They are always looking for special adopters and foster homes who are willing to give an old pet a happy ending. Not everyone can take in an old pet with special needs, but if you can it is a special thing to make an unwanted animals last years happy.

They sound like a wonderful place. I have mixed feeling about the fact that they are far from where I live. I wish I could visit the sanctuary, but I know I would want to help and I think I am already helping as many pets as I can.

Catherine I'm not that far from Vancouver I will go and check this shelter out, I know that I have to know that I will
be leaving there with a new pet. I won't go just yet though, as we're still getting used to our baby Leo.

I thought of you when I realized where the sanctuary is located. When you visit the place try to get some pictures and come back and tell us about it.

I was wanting to help take older small pets, but I am too far away and there are old pets and needy pets here.

You will want to take something  home for sure.  I just can't understand why people dump old pets. After all the years they have been together you would expect some loyalty.

I don't understand either, it is so sad, I will let you know when I go there. Like I said we are getting used to having a baby again, my husband really wasn't ready after we lost our 15 year old girl.now he loves our kitten, he knows it will be so hard not to take all these unwanted pets home with us.

Yes, you do need to settle the new baby in before you do anything else. You could always become a foster parent. I think they always need people to foster the pets before they can find them homes.

I would love to visit the shelter. I looks like a beautiful place for animals to live out their final days.

I think that is a great place. It's unfortunate that people abandon their older pets.

Pet abandonment is such a sad thing. I feel so much better when I learn about some of the shelters that are out there able to help.

I am glad to hear a place like this exists. Yes it can be hard for some people to take on an older animal with special needs. A bit of money is needed, as recurrent vets' fees can be demanding. For those who have financial resources, the kindest thing is to take one or two or more of these lonely deserving animals out of their institutionalised life and let them live out their days with love, and kindness as part of a family. Even if it's only for a few months...it would mean such a lot to them.

You help so many creatures Catherine. And they know you do!

I have taken older animals to give them a place to die in peace. The results are often surprizing. The older pet turns out to have lots of life left in them.  Look at old Earl the corn snake. We didn't have a lot of years, but they were special. He was one fine snake and I was privileged to share time with him.

An old guinea pig like Rosie was a source of fun and laughter for the 15 months she had left.

I hope many people choose to adopt or foster an older pet. Puppies and kittens are very cute, but the old ones are special.

This is a wonderful idea. All pets deserve a home, even the old and maybe not so cute ones.
I can vouch for the joy of giving an elder pet a home for their last days and seeing them relax into a loving home. In my case I'm sure this gave the pet a new lease of life and longer with us.
It's always sad to lose a pet, but if you've given them a good life, even if it's only for their last few weeks, you get a wonderful feeling of contentment, knowing that they lived well and were well loved.
Goldie was only with us for 8 weeks, but what a time she had and what an effect she had on us and our herd.
