Gander Animal Shelter reopens - Catherine - 11-02-2018

Early in September the Gander, Newfoundland Shelter took in a litter of puppies that turned out to have distemper. The whole litter was infected and it spread to the other dogs. The shelter is in an old building with no quarantine facilities.
Sadly all, but two of the dogs developed distemper. To prevent the possible spread of the infection the dogs that were sick were euthanized. It was a difficult decision, but the shelter would not have been able to stop the spread of the disease.

The shelter has been closed since then, but now they have reopened. Two dogs survived because they were probably already vaccinated.  In all ten dogs and puppies died. The staff is still upset and they have done a memorial tribute to the dogs who died.

Fund raising for the newer much better shelter has already started. The cast from the musical "Come From Away" has been fundraising at their performances and has produced over 600,000. With a new shelter a tragic situation like this can be avoided.
Until then they are being very careful and they are not forgetting the dogs that are lost.
I wish them every success.

What a great fundraiser. Thank you for sharing!

Gander will get its new shelter in the future. It is only a matter of time. A new facility will allow them to quarantine new animals coming in and prevent future tragedies.

Hopefully they will be able to fund raise further for vaccination programs. It is a very isolated area and many animals would not have been vaccinated and certainly none of the wildlife.
