The orange fronted parakeet of New Zealand was thought to be extinct. It was rediscovered in 1993. Conservation efforts have helped and their numbers have increased, slowly, but they have increased.
This year has been a record year for the trees that provide their food. Birds are producing multiple clutches of eggs.
Instead of their small increases in numbers, the population could actually double in number.

This is not just a happy story about an endangered species making a comeback. It is also a story that tells us that conservation efforts matter. Conservation helped the birds to increase their numbers slowly. Nature provided the chance for their numbers to double. If the conservation efforts had not helped increase the number of parakeets, doubling the population would have had less of an impact.
Our efforts at conservation are so important. We can keep a species going until nature is able to help.
If we let a species slip away even the best breeding year ever can't help an extinct population.
