Giant Panda gives birth at Washington Zoo - Catherine - 08-22-2020

This has been a bad year for humans, but it has been a good year for Giant Pandas.  Mei Xiang, at the age of 22, has just given birth. As an experienced mom with three surviving offspring, Mei Xiang immediately started caring for the cub.

This is good news for a species that has such small numbers. With Mei Xiang's experience there is every hope the cub will survive. Pandas a born very tiny and fragile. They need a lot of care. The extreme quiet of the zoo under the pandemic lockdown has probably helped  make this birth possible. Even though the zoo is reopening, the panda house is off limits. Mom and new baby still need their privacy and quiet time.
