New baby Orca born on the west coast. - Catherine - 02-20-2021

You know a species is endangered when the birth of one baby is a cause for celebration. The southern resident Orcas are very endangered and every whale is accounted for. This little baby is very healthy looking and thriving. This is the mother whale's fourth calf. Sadly so far only her first calf has survived. Her second calf was killed by military exercises in 2012. The third calf died as well. Let's hope this calf is strong and survives all the dangers that Orcas face  right now.

It is a good start to the year when there is a strong healthy baby born. There have been some bad years for the southern resident Orcas. I can only hope that this calf is a sign that this is going to be a good year.
