City of Calgary to choose an official bird. - Catherine - 03-16-2022

In 2021 Nature Canada certified Calgary as a bird friendly city. Now the city has to choose an official city bird. The short list is the Black-capped Chickadee, the Northern Flicker, the Red-breasted Nuthatch, the Blue Jay and the Black Billed Magpie. The city will be voting from April 1 to May 1, with the results to be announced on May 14, World Migratory Bird Day.

I like this idea. It acknowledges the importance of birds in the life of the city. Having lived in Calgary, I think they should go with the Magpie. Look how beautiful they are and they are very clever. I do miss the Magpies. We don't have them in Toronto. We've got squirrels and it is not the same thing.

So count me on team Magpie. I wonder if I can still vote in Calgary? I have not lived there in over 40 years.
