Captive hatched Curlews released - Catherine - 06-27-2022

Curlews in the UK are declining in numbers. The chick survival rate is low. Many times they nest at airfields. Up till now the nests have been removed for aviation safety. Now they collect the eggs and hatch them. The chicks are raised to a certain point and then released. They choose the release point carefully so the birds can live there are have a place to nest. The numbers are not enough to make up for the decline in Curlews, but it is a help.

A project like this is a start. If they can expand it then more chicks would survive. What is really needed isĀ  habitat restoration. Even partial restoration would give the birds somewhere to nest. Banning any form of mowing during nesting season would help too. We caused this problem, we need to fix it.
