Penguins dying of avian flu in South Africa - Catherine - 10-02-2022

Sad news, avian flu is spreading in a South African Penguin colony. Twenty-eight out of 3000 birds have died since August. Dead and dying birds are being removed to try and reduce the spread. There is concern for the penguin species and for the other birds that could also get infected.

This is terrible. The avian flu is turning up in a number of places and killing a lot of different species. We have no way of knowing how bad this will get or how many species will be affected. All we can do is try to help where we can.  Because birds migrate it is not possible to contain the virus to one area.
I hope what they can do is enough to protect the penguins. They are such cute little birds. It would be sad to lose them.
