It is unlikely that animals will stare at the sun so their eyes are probably safe. The real problem for our pets is from all the hype and activities 
surrounding the event.
It is recommended that we try and stick to routines and keep things as normal as possible.

I suppose wildlife will curl up and sleep during the dark period. It might make sense to walk the dog after the eclipse. Once things are light again it will normal again. Some people are pretty excited about this so I can see how it would unsettle a dog. They would know something is up, but they will not know what.
