Mysterious black boxes in Toronto parks...they are bat houses - Catherine - 06-08-2024 People have been spotting mysterious black boxes on poles in a number of parks is Toronto. They are not very big. They are not quite bird houses, but they sort of make you think of bird houses. It turns out they are bat houses. We have eight native species of bats in Ontario. Half of them are endangered. They are struggling with habitat loss. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has a mandate to mitigate habitat loss. One thing they are doing is setting up safe nesting boxes where the females can raise their pups safely. https://www.blogto.com/city/2024/06/black-boxes-spotted-toronto/ I haven't seen one yet, but I know the park where some of them are. It would be worth visiting. If I was there at sunset, I might even see a bat. There used to be a lot more bats. I remember watching for them in the sky at dusk. If these boxes can help bring them back they are worth it. We could have them all over the city and it would be fine. There are lots of parks where it would be good to have more bats. Our bats eat our mosquitos. We should have thought of that before destroying habitats in the first place. We have no lack of Mosquitos so more bats would be a good thing. |
