Dam removal restores salmon rivers - Catherine - 08-28-2024

In California/Oregon the Klamath River has been blocked by a number of dams. The salmon population has declined as a result. The dams were to produce electricity, but they really only produced about 2% of the electricity. Taking the dams out will allow the river to flow along its natural bed and restore itself. The salmon will be able to return to their spawning beds. Their numbers can increase again.

This is part of a larger project to remove dams and restore rivers. Over 2000 dams have been removed, most in the last 25 years.

Salmon have already been spotted near the mouth of the river.
Given a chance nature will restore itself. Every river freed of its dams is one more piece of habitat restored.
It feels good to hear about a positive change. People are out there trying to repair the damage we have done to nature.
