Manitoba Vets vote to ban tail docking - Catherine - 01-28-2025
Manitoba Veterinarians have voted to ban tail docking for dogs. A large majority of Manitoba Vets voted for the ban.
They consulted about the practice for a number of years and concluded that it is an unnecessary practice. It serves no purpose, it is painful and it does limit a dogs ability to communicate.
In future Manitoba Vets will no longer be allowed to dock a dog's tail.

This is a step in the right direction. A number of other provinces have already banned painful cosmetic procedures that are nothing short of mutilation.
Gradually Canada is banning things like tail docking, ear cropping and declawing. Unfortunately it has to be done one province at a time. That means it is a slow process. Each provincial veterinary medical association has to examine the issue independently. Some day all of these cruel practices will be banned in Canada.
For now we have to be happy with each step in the right direction.
