Australian Cockatoos use drinking fountains - Catherine - 06-05-2025 The Cockatoos in Australia are very clever. They learned how to open garbage bins. Now it seems they like fresh water. They can be seen waiting their turn to use a drinking fountain. They have to turn a handle to turn the water on and then they drink from the spout. It is not an easy task and sometimes it takes time to learn the technique. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/03/science/cockatoos-water-fountains-sydney-australia.html Why do they do it, when there are other water sources? It is way cooler to drink from a water fountain and the water is cold and fresh. The real question is what next. What will these clever birds figure out. Clearly they are watching humans and learning how to do things. So if you think you are being watched, look around. If there is a cockatoo nearby, you probably are being watched. RE: Australian Cockatoos use drinking fountains - Aussienan - 06-05-2025 Cockies are smart birds we had a pet cockatoo a long time ago. RE: Australian Cockatoos use drinking fountains - Catherine - 06-06-2025 The more I hear about cockatoos, the more I am impressed with their intelligence. It must have been interesting to live with a cockatoo. |
