Old barges sunk in the Thames to create Islands for birds - Catherine - 01-29-2026

Three old barges that were used to haul coal are now being used to house birds. The barges are beingĀ sunk into the river Thames and turned into islands for sea birds. They are being positioned in the intertidal mud flats near Northey Island. They create a new land mass that is hoped to reduce erosion of existing habitat.

I think the idea is brilliant and I hope it works. It provides for the birds and it provides a solution for how to get rid of old barges.
Maybe the idea could be used in other areas, in different ways. Anything we canĀ  do to help sea birds is good.
