Magawa was trained to detect landmines. He worked for five years in Cambodia and saved many lives.
In 2020 he was awarded a gold medal for his work. In 2026, Magawa was honoured with a statue commemorating his years of service.
The statue was unveiled on International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

They have a number of hero rats who are working to save human lives. They are riding the world of land mines and they are detecting Tuberculosis.
Rats with their keen sense of smell are able to detect things we can't. With their help we could clear the world of landmines.
Their ability to detect TB allows us to treat it before it spreads. Magawa may be the first rat to get a statue, but all of them are heroes.
