Nibi was found on the side of the road, a few days old, two years ago.
Newhouse Wildlife Rescue was called and they did try and reunite her with adult beavers in the area. It didn't work, so they have raised her.
She has shown no interest in other beavers.
MassWildlife was determined to force her immediate release.
Thousands of signatures on a petition, appeals to the courts and the state governor have been successful in protecting Nibi from a forced release.
She is safe for now.

Nibi does not have survival skills. This late in the year she couldn't possibly build a lodge and store enough food for winter, even if she knew how. Releasing her from care into the wild would be a death sentence. She probably wouldn't survive the first really cold night. If she did she would probably starve, if a predator didn't get her first. This is one of the problems of rescuing wildlife. Not everything can be released. It is wonderful when it can be done, but it just doesn't work in every case. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue is prepared to care for Nibi. To do anything else would be cruel. Maybe someday things will be different for Nibi.
Certainly if a release was to take place, it would need to be planned so that it could succeed. Until then, Nibi is well cared for and that is what really matters.
