Winnipeg plans to gas ground squirrels as population control
#1
Winnipeg is having a problem with the number of Richardson's ground Squirrels who live in the city parks.
There are different ways of addressing the problem, but Winnipeg plans to use a sulphur gas compound in the gopher holes.
This method takes up to an hour to kill the rodents. That is an hour of suffering.

There are more humane methods. It is probably easier to just gas them, but it is cruel. Choosing the cruel option is not acceptable.

Why are the ground squirrels over populating. Where is their natural predator, who would normally keep their numbers in check.
Maybe the environment is in trouble in Winnipeg and the ground squirrels are just a symptom. Perhaps they should analyze that and find an environmentally balanced solution.
