Rare Takahe chick hatched at Zealandia sanctuary
#1
Takahe are a flightless bird native to New Zealand. They were thought to be extinct. They were rediscovered in 1948.
An endangered species program has brought their number up to 500. Hatching even one chick helps the whole species.
The parents were thought to be infertile, but they surprized everyone by hatching out and caring for a chick.

They are such an unusual looking bird. You can see the dinosaur connection in this very ancient species.
This is another conservation effort that is working. They have gone from presumed to be extinct to having 500 birds.
Someday, maybe they can occupy their whole original territory. That would be an amazing success.
