An African Colombian collective known as Guardianes del Mar tends to the coral reefs and works to clean up ghost gear. Their divers encountered a young female Humpback entangled in ghost gear. She was with her mother. The divers carefully asked the mother whale for permission to help her baby. They asked the entangled whale for her consent as well. Then they worked to free her. Success this time, but there is still a lot of ghost gear out there.
Where ghost gear lands on a coral reef it destroys it. The gear must be removed quickly and very carefully.

There are 9 certified divers in the collective and they are working to certify more. Considering how much abandoned fishing gear there is in the ocean, they will never not be needed. The oceans are full of lost gear. Many animals die as a result. Even rescuing one whale special. That one whale could live a long time and have any number of calves.
Protecting the coral reefs from ghost gear is helping the health of the worlds oceans. What these divers are doing is amazing and it helps us all.
I wish them every success in their work.
