Japan overrun with North American Raccoons.

There was a 1970s Anime called Rascal the Raccoon. It started a craze for having a raccoon pet. Over a thousand raccoons were imported.
Raccoons proved to not work out as pets. Many of them were released. Japan has no natural predators for raccoons, so they have spread.
Now they are a serious problem. Efforts to trap them can't keep up with the numbers.

It is always a mistake to bring an animal into a new habitat and let it go. Who knows how far the raccoons will spread.
There is no easy solution to the problem. Whatever is done, it won't  be pleasant for the raccoons. We have done it again. We have created an ecological disaster that we don't know how to fix.
