After near extinction, the Buffalo are being restored the the prairies, one herd at a time. The Yellowstone herd has been very successful. It is also a genetically pure herd, descending from the wild herds of Buffalo that once roamed the prairies. Eleven of these Buffalo have now been transferred to an Indigenous community in Saskatchewan.
The herd has settled in and is already restoring the land.

Buffalo are a keystone species. They keep the land healthy and foster biodiversity.
Because the Buffalo have returned, other plants and animals have returned. There is already an eagle in the area.
The land will be restored, but so will the people who live close to the land.
For now the Buffalo are being allowed to do their job of healing the land. It will be exciting to see if there are any new calves this spring.
