Woodpecker pokes holes in a Calgary home
#1
A couple in Calgary has a stucco covered home. A type of woodpecker, the Northern Flicker, has been poking holes in their home. The bird wakes them up at dawn and he leaves holes that have to be repaired. Every year he comes back and does more damage.
The bird is a protected species and home insurance does not cover bird damage.

They will probably have to cover their home in vinyl siding.

I wonder why the bird goes after their house? It is kind of a wood colour, but wood like.

Normally woodpeckers go after trees for insects. Calgary doesn't have a lot of trees. Trees often get cut down when houses are built.
Without the trees he needs for food, the bird is looking for food in the walls of the house.
Maybe we should think before we cut trees down and maybe we should plant more trees.
