An Ontario Swan family has had quite the year. First it was Charlotte and Mango. They are a bonded pair of swans living on Lake Ontario near Scarborough Bluffs. Mango was hurt. He was captured and taken in by Toronto Wildlife. It took days to heal him. When he was returned to Charlotte their meeting was memorable.
They hatched some eggs this summer and had two female cygnets. All was well until people started feeding bread to the cygnets. They developed a wing deformity called Angel Wing. It is caused by malnourishment from eating bread. The wings bend outward and the birds are unable to fly. The cygnets were captured and taken to Shades of Hope Wildlife refuge. After months of work they have recovered and have been released at a private pond in Stouffville. There are other swans there who can teach them how to be swans again. Sadly they can't be returned to their parents on Lake Ontario.

Mango's original injury was probably human caused. The damage to the cygnets was definitely human caused. I think we humans have messed up enough with the swans. We need to leave them alone, except when we are fixing the damage humans have done in the first place. I am glad there is a happy ending for the cygnets. Sadly they should have grown up with their parents. Charlotte and Mango will never know what happened to them. That is sad.
