10 years of bringing back the Buffalo to the prairies
#1
Buffalo once roamed the Canadian west in vast numbers. They were deliberately killed off. Now they are being brought back. Ten years ago a herd of 22 was brought to Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. Those buffalo have lived on the land and thrived. Parts of the herd have been shared with other communities.
Now there really are buffalo on the prairies in ever increasing numbers. It is a  beautiful conservation/rewilding story.
There is a documentary called Singing Back the Buffalo that tells some of the story.
It is good and I have seen it.

Restoring native wildlife is the keep to restoring the planet. Buffalo were a keystone species. They spread seeds and fertilized them in a way that noting else in their environment could do. If we want the land to thrive we need to help the buffalo to thrive.

This is proving true globally. We can reverse ecological damage by bringing back the animals that kept environments healthy.
It is one success story after another with conservation efforts. It is a slow process, but it is one that works.
