This is really sad for the charity. The Regional Animal Protection Society in Richmond BC received notice of a very large donation.
They were sent a cheque for 95,000 dollars. They deposited the money and started work on their cat sanctuary.
Then they were notified that too much money had been sent and that they should return 70,000 dollars. Fortunately, their bank called them and warned them that the 95,000 dollar cheque fraudulent. So they didn't send any money to the fraudsters. However, they spent money on the construction materials that they didn't really have. That leaves them in a lot of trouble.

That scam is getting to be common, but I have never heard of them targeting an animal shelter. I hope they catch them soon. Because shelters do receive money,
getting a large cheque is not that odd. When I get offered money like that, I delete the email. Of course it is a fraud. Why would someone send me money.
A charity would be easy to fool. Good thing their bank was quick to respond. In future charities will have to be careful about large unexpected donations.
I hope the shelter is able to bring in enough donations to cover what they lost.
