End the Guga hunt.....it is ended!

A Guga is a juvenile Gannet. Every year on a remote Scottish island, they hunt and kill  Gugas. The birds have not yet fledged so they are taking them from their nests. They are being used for food, but it is still a cruel hunt.

There is something inherently wrong about taking a baby bird from its nest while it is still helpless. Calling it a hunt is ridiculous. It is a slaughter.
It rates up there with the Canadian seal hunt and the Icelandic whale hunt. They are cruel. It is time we stopped doing cruel things to animals.
We are capable of doing better. So why aren't we doing better.

There is hope. The permit for the hunt has not yet been granted. It might not be granted at all.

A lot of people petitioned against  the hunt. The hunt is cruel. There really is something nasty about killing a baby bird before it can fly.
I know there are a lot of these "traditional" events that are still being held. There may have been a time when the hunt was needed for survival.
Sometimes, as humans, we hang on to things that we did in the past, simply because we did them in the past.
It is okay to let go of something that we no longer need to do. Whatever they are celebrating, they could find a better way to express it.
We don't need to cling to cruel outdated practices. Surely as humans, we can do better than that.

The hunt is ended! No permit has been granted. For the first time in 400 years, the chicks are safe.

It is time we stopped these brutal hunts. They don't make us look good as human beings.
Just because something has been done for many years, doesn't mean it should continue.
It is brutal and cruel to kill helpless chicks still in the nest. It doesn't make it right just because it has been done for many years.
Maybe they needed the food back when it started, but  we have other resources now.
"We have always done it this way" is not a good enough reason for animal cruelty.
No reason is good enough to justify animal cruelty.
