Iceland is in the process of banning whaling. It should be complete by 2024. Instead of killing the whales, they are promoting whale watching. The catch phrase is "Meet us, don't eat us". In the past tourists were encouraged to eat whale meat. Now they are encouraged to go on whale watching tours.

In the end whale watching is a more sustainable source of income. The same whale can be watched over and over for years my many different paying tourists.
Even if there is a certain amount of financial incentive to the ban, the results are still the same. Iceland will no longer kill whales.
That is cause for celebration.
