They may go through a number of theories before they really understand the ancestry of snakes.
I find little similarity in the appearance of a snake head compared to a monitor head. I would want to look at the bones in detail of the various family members (snakes and monitors) and see how well they coincide.
It may take a comparison of genetic markers to come even close to a history of the evolution of snakes. As always they are secretive.
