Live shipping of animals for slaughter, an animal welfare failure

The live shipment of animals for slaughter fails basic standards of animal care.
The conditions the animals are shipped under are unacceptable. They travel for long periods in cramped, crowded conditions, lacking basic food and water.
And when they arrive they are killed in substandard slaughterhouses.

This article deals with the European situation, but it is a global problem.
Animals are shipped live under terrible conditions. When they arrive they are slaughtered under terrible conditions.
It might mean making some changes in agricultural practices, but live shipping needs to stop. We have ways of rapid transport so we don't need to ship animals alive. If they are going to be killed and eaten, they don't need to be killed after a lengthy journey. They could be spared that much. 

Of course veal is a whole different issue. Do we really need to eat baby animals in the first place.
