Vulture decline in India led to increase in human deaths
#1
India's vulture population collapsed in the 90s. It turned out a drug farmers used for their cows was toxic to vultures.
The drug patent expired in the 90s and the drug became more readily available. Vultures started dying in large numbers.
They may not be able to recover and repopulate.
The side effect of a vulture decline is the spread of disease. Vultures perform a clean-up function for the environment.
The side effect of a spread of disease was an increase in human deaths. As many as half a million humans have died because of the vulture decline.

We don't realize the effect our actions can have on the environment. Farmers used a drug for their cattle and vultures died.
Because vultures died the environment was impacted.
We don't realize the effect environmental changes can have on our well being.
The environment was less healthy because vultures were not there to clean it up. Because of that, humans died.

We need to think about how we treat the environment. It can have serious consequences for us.
