His identity cannot remain secret forever. Delvy Workman denies having killed the lion, but his attitude shows approval of lion hunting and he says he will help others to go lion hunting. See:

Apparently, the person responsible paid at least £35 000! People have lots of money to spend on a trophy killing. That money could have been given to charity instead. See:

This male lion was in his prime, so it was definitely not a case of culling an elderly lion.
