That’s a really interesting point. I agree that domestication is probably part of the explanation, but I’d be careful about saying it proves that domestication caused the ability. Goats already showed an ability to use some human communicative cues in earlier studies, and this new experiment suggests they can also use the direction of a human voice to locate hidden food.

It would be especially interesting to test closely related wild species alongside domestic goats. If the domesticated animals consistently outperform their wild relatives, that would be much stronger evidence for domestication shaping this kind of human-directed communication.
