Helping the Monarch Butterfly

Monarch Butterfly numbers had dropped drastically over the last 20 years. There are lots of reasons why and if we had more time and butterflies we could discuss it. What we really need to do is help the remaining monarchs. Planting flowering plants for the adults to feed on is good and essential. However, more importantly we need to plant Milkweed. It is the only plant the caterpillars feed on.

This is something that everyone can do. We can plant the milkweed anywhere. It is hardy and I like how it looks.

It is not every day that we can help save a species by doing a little thing like planting a weed. I think it could be planted in the back alleys if I get some more seeds. I have a few plants in one of the gardens I tend. From there I can spread them all over.

I grew up with the sight of hundreds of Monarch butterflies. Last summer I saw a few over the whole summer.
