Twenty five per cent? That is very deeply sad. I am now finding it hard to understand why twenty five per cent of average people who have animals don't love them enough to see them through old age. What does that say about us?
I find it hard to understand why such people would presumably care for aging parents, and even if they found that difficult, would usually try hard to make sure the person got care in their own home for as long as possible....yet don't want to do the same for their animal companion; an animal companion who may love them more than they have ever been loved, by anyone.
Oh yes, I have heard of this, even in my own area. A woman I used to know set up an animal rescue and once told me all the reasons why people think it's okay to dump their animals. Some "reasons" were basically absurd. Others were just heartbreaking.
