Blood donor dogs and cats

It seems that there is a program of blood donations for dogs and cats in Newfoundland. People sign up their pet and if the animal is comfortable with the program they can become a regular donor and be on an emergency donation list. Some dogs are happy with the experience. They get fussed over and they get treats and it is a good experience for them. For a big healthy dog, giving blood is not problem physically. In return they get good regular check ups and blood work to ensure that they are healthy. If they ever need blood it will be provided.

It is a good program. Animals lives are saved by the donations and the donor dog gets regular veterinary check-ups.
This is better than the system we talked about some time ago where dogs are kept as donors and their blood is sold to clinics. Those dogs have miserable lives and they are definitely being used.   

Voluntary donors get the  satisfaction of knowing they are helping and they are treated very well. The owners certainly know their pet is helping and animals take their cues from us. They know people are happy with them so they know they have done something good. 

There need to be more programs like this one. Everyone benefits and lives are saved.
