Baby Orca spotted in J Pod
#1
The population of Orcas off of the west coast of Canada is known as J Pod.  It is a critically endangered population. Its numbers are very low and there have been no births since 2020.  A few days ago researchers made a happy observation. There is a newborn. The little Orca was spotted swimming with a female who did not have a calf the last time she was seen. It is hoped that there will be more births to the pod this year.

The birth of an Orca is always a happy thing. A birth to J Pod is a very happy event. This population of Orcas have struggled to survive. Their numbers are low and they have had few births. Every birth like this increases their chances of survival. I am going to hope for more births this year. I guess I have a special fondness for J Pod. The Orca I saw up close when I was on the west coast many years ago would have been a member of J Pod.
