Animal shelter overwhelmed by abandoned rabbits.

A local humane society in southern Ontario is overwhelmed by abandoned rabbits. Some were actually found abandoned outside. Some were left at the shelter. Others are on a waiting list to be surrendered as soon as there is room.
There is always a surge of rabbits at the shelters after Easter. It is not even Easter yet and the shelter is overwhelmed with rabbits. What are they going to do when the post Easter rush hits.

Rabbit abandonment is a problem every year. People want a baby bunny for Easter, but they don't want the rabbit it grows into.
This year it is probably pandemic baby bunnies. People at home during the lockdowns had fun with a baby bunny. Not that things are opening up they don't want their bunnies anymore. This is a serious problem for this shelter right now and it is probably a problem for a lot of other shelters or it will be after Easter. 
Sadly adult bunnies are hard to adopt out. For many rabbits the future is not good. They will spend too much of their lives in cages at animal shelters.


Rabbits require special care. No one should take in a baby rabbit until they understand what it means to live with a rabbit.
They are a wonderful pet, but they are a bit of work to look after. Rabbits can be so loving and they are worth it.
