Animal rights protest in Lisbon

The constitutional court in Portugal is pondering whether abusing a pet is a crime. It currently is a crime, but there is a movement to overturn those laws.
The protesters are pushing to have animal abuse still recognized as a crime. The protests were organized by the Animal Intervention and Rescue group.
Portugal's President when encouraged by them, did speak in favor of protecting animals. Overturning the current protection would be a serious set back for animal rights.

This is a serious situation. If the courts are able to overturn animal protection laws so easily then they were never strong laws in the first place. If it can happen in one country, this trend could spread to other countries. Protesters need to succeed in saving the animal protection laws and even strengthening them.
