Lucy the elephant turns 50.
#1
Lucy the elephant is the lone Asian elephant that lives at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. She is well known because of efforts to relocate her to an elephant sanctuary in a warmer location where she could be with other elephants.

It is a tricky situation. It has caused a lot of controversy. Moving elephants to sanctuaries is a good thing. They deserve a good life.
That doesn't mean every elephant can be moved. It was determined that Lucy would not be able to survive the move. Lucy is getting good care and she is familiar with her surroundings. At 50 years old she is still walking around looking good. They have assessed her health and think she could live another 10 years.

So Lucy will stay where she is and the zoo will not get more elephants.
Over time as the older elephants die off, there will be no more zoo or circus elephants in captivity.
We know now that we should never have used elephants for our entertainment. We know they deserve our respect.
Right now, Lucy is being treated with respect as she deserves and that will have to do.
