Feral goldish in Ontario lakes
#1
People turn pets lose all the time. It is bad when it is a dog or cat. The ending can be quite sad.
People think they are doing the right thing when they turn goldfish lose. They drop them in any pond or lake and think it will be alright.
Goldfish are adaptable, they can survive terrible conditions, they can live a long time, and they can grow quite large.
That is a recipe for disaster for local lakes. Goldfish can outcompete native fish and reduce their numbers.

I don't know how we can fix this. Goldfish in the Great Lakes could do a lot of damage.
It isn't going to end well. It is sad for the fish who didn't ask to be dumped in a lake.
Please don't dump Goldfish anywhere. I am sure a local shelter would be happy to take any unwanted fish.
