Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication
#1
Raccoons are definitely getting used to being around humans. They are showing signs of becoming domesticated.
We thought that humans caught animals and domesticated them. It didn't work that way. Animals started to live around us and become used to us.
They gradually became part of our lives. Raccoons are showing signs of doing that.

I know Toronto raccoons come into  our homes and raid our kitchens. They can open peanut butter jars. They definitely can open frigs and cupboards.
I know people who have come home early and found a raccoon sleeping on their bed. He came in the window. They were early that day. I bet he had been sleeping there everyday and normally was gone before they got home.

So does this mean there will be pet raccoons before too long? Raccoons might want this to happen. They must see dogs and cats living comfortable lives with us and wonder why they can't have the same. Maybe they will.
