Helping the Monarch Butterfly
#1
Monarch Butterfly numbers had dropped drastically over the last 20 years. There are lots of reasons why and if we had more time and butterflies we could discuss it. What we really need to do is help the remaining monarchs. Planting flowering plants for the adults to feed on is good and essential. However, more importantly we need to plant Milkweed. It is the only plant the caterpillars feed on.

This is something that everyone can do. We can plant the milkweed anywhere. It is hardy and I like how it looks.

It is not every day that we can help save a species by doing a little thing like planting a weed. I think it could be planted in the back alleys if I get some more seeds. I have a few plants in one of the gardens I tend. From there I can spread them all over.

I grew up with the sight of hundreds of Monarch butterflies. Last summer I saw a few over the whole summer.Undecided

It's wonderful that something so simple as dropping a few seeds here and there can contribute to the survival of a species. This is something we all can do.

I think people in Toronto are really working at it.
My neighbourhood is built over a buried creek. I think my place is on the western edge of the old ravine. They literally put a big pipe in for the creek to run through and buried it.
There is strong feeling about Garrison Creek and they do walks along the path of the creek. The neighbourhood is strong on being green and helping ecology. So yes we are planting with the butterflies in mind.

My part in it is to plant my place with a sustainable bird and butterfly friendly garden.
I would like to see us dig up the parts of Garrison Creek that we can dig up. Much of it has parks over it so we could dig it up. It would help with the flooding because the water could run into the creek instead of into people's basements.

Planting Milk Week for Monarchs is part of a bigger picture. You would be amazed at how many people have removed their grass lawns and put in gardens. Walking the neighbourhood is wonderful because each street is one long garden.
If the butterflies make it back we are ready for them.
