14 endangered species, 40 years later
#1
The USA endangered species act is 40 years old. The original list had many names on it. Some made it and some did not.
Take a look at the fate of 14 of those species.

Sadly some have been lost forever.Smiley6
Some are just holding on and some have recovered.

The whooping Cranes are one of the biggest success stories. Much of that work was done in Canada.

The California Condor is another success story.

These are just examples of the work that is being done to save biodiversity. We are not going to be able to save them all, but because people are trying, many species have survived and rebounded. It is a success story and anyone who has had any part in it, even in a small way, can be proud of the outcome.

These stories are good news, and Canada has done so well there.

I am glad 20 species are now certainly 'off the list' (and thank goodness the list was started in the first place.)
But I am very sorry indeed to hear of the failures. When a species goes -it goes forever.
Much of that has to do with human impact on natural habitats.

I notice that one of the birds vanished after they flooded its nesting grounds. So there have been some wins and loses, but if the list hadn't been started more species would be gone.

There are other species that are not on that list that were extinct in the wild. There were enough in zoos to create a healthy breeding gene pool. After years of work there are enough now that they have been able to return them to the wild. Prezwalskis horses are one success story. Black footed ferrets and Bison have survived because we worked to save them.

We may have caused the problem, but at least we are working to save as many species as we can.
I like to believe that we can fix enough of the damage to make things work.
I am proud of Canada's part in this, but a lot of other countries have done good work too.
