NO to Dog/Cat meat petitions
#11
Local police may have been in the pay of the dog stealers and traders, but one cannot know for sure. But now this is so much in the public eye that even they have been forced to do something, possibly from orders from above.

It is hard to interpret, as the news coming in is very fragmented, and a day or so old, but it seems that an animal rescue organisation "Dalian Vshine" has now taken the dogs...(?)
That is what I think the most recent post is saying:

This is good that an existing shelter can take the dogs they have rescued. That leaves them free to rescue more if possible.

You are right LPC, the police are probably being paid off. However all this publicity makes it hard for them to not do the right thing. All the dog owners who can prove they own the dog can take some kind of action against the police for failing to act.

The whole situation is a mess, but the work of rescuing dogs and publicizing the festival is happening. Tremendous progress is being made to stop the dog meat industry.

People who say it is none of their business what other people eat, can't be quite so aloof when you tell them that they boil animals alive and torture them. If a tradition is really horrible then it needs to stop.

Yes, the public outrage is not so much because dogs and cats are eaten -although that is bad enough -but because of the unthinkable torture these poor Souls have to endure, as a result of extreme levels of human creativity at its worst.

Hopefully now the dogs are safe with the Rescue Centre, it may well be possible for the owners of dogs previously incarcerated, to claim them. The Distemper outbreak may slow things down though. The dogs as far as I could make out, were receiving medical care, but Distemper is highly contagious and has an unusual progression for disease, as dogs can seem much better for a while before succumbing again to the virus. Strict quarantine plus nursing care is usually recommended for dogs with Distemper.

This rescue from Tianjin has had a good ending so far so I'll post some recent photos of the dogs rescued by Dalian Vshine. From Compassion for China's Animals Facebook page:

Some pictures of the dogs in the Rescue facility:

They are getting medical care and vaccination.

It looks like there is a lot of good stuff happening. There may be a horrible slaughter going on, but there is clearly a strong opposition to it.
I think the animal rights/protection movement in Asia is gaining strength. Deeply held ideas about how animals can be treated are being challenged. The younger generation is influenced by the rest of the world. They are clearly seeing things differently.

I think we can hope for major changes. Just like the things we struggle with in the west, it will take time, but the change will come.

I hope to live long enough to hear people take about animal abuse as a thing of the past and wonder how it was ever allowed.
