Finally, a penalty that comes close to justice.

This sets a very good legal precedent for sentencing.

Also importantly the reason they give for this sentence sends a strong message to other countries. The tourists not longer come to Malawi and no longer spend money because the poachers have killed so many of the animals. The game parks are no longer vibrant with animal life.
Therefore poaching destroys the country's economy. This means it effects the wellbeing of the whole country and everyone in it.
Keeping the animals alive and well brings in tourists. Tourists are needed if Malawi is going to thrive.

If this is what it takes to save the animals then it will do. It always seems to come down to money, but I do think ecotourism is what will save elephants and rhinos.
