The first Bison calf born in Banff in 140 years!
#1
In February of this year a small herd of Bison was reintroduced to Banff National Park in Alberta Canada. It is hoped that a herd of Bison will stabalize the ecosystem. Ten pregnant females and six males were moved from Alberta's Elk Island National park.

On Earth Day 2017 a bison calf was born in Banff, the first in 140 years. Since then 2 more calves have been  born.

This is a big step, restoring the land by reintroducing indigenous species. The increase in biodiversity will have a powerful impact on the existing species and the conditions in the park.

Right now the Bison are not free roaming, but they will be. Once they are established as a herd it will be possible to expand their range and then turn them loose.
Remember the impact the wolves had on Yellowstone National Park. Dare we hope for another eco-miracle.
Returning keystone species to an area does seem to restore the health of the ecology of the area.
If it can be done, it will be the Bison that do it. It will take years, but the land will be healed by their presence.
