Horse dies during Calgary Stampede
#1
To be more precise a horse had to be put down after it broke a leg during the Calgary Stampede Chuck Wagon Races.
To put it in perspective, 60 horses have died in the Chuck Wagon Races since 1986. In 2015 four horses died during the races. Some changes were made to make it safer for horses and riders/drivers, but it is still a dangerous race.

I have seen the Chuck Wagon Races. I lived in Calgary a for a number of years. I think one of the things that make them so popular is how dangerous they are. People love the thrill as wagons almost collide. Sadly often enough there are collisions and horses are injured to the point where they have to be euthanized. It seems that the danger is built into the races. That is how they are run.
It just doesn't seem worth the life of a beautiful horse to have a few minutes of entertainment.
I don't know if it is possible to make the races safer. Something needs to change, but sixty dead horses are sixty too many.
