Eclipse 2017, how did animals react?
#1
People were observing animals everywhere to see how they reacted to the eclipse.
Nashville Zoo was one such place. Giraffe ran in circles, orangutans climbed as high as possible and Rhinos went to bed.

Some animals are expected to react.

I will be interested to hear what other people observed. I was in an area that had a 70% eclipse. It got noticeably darker. but not actually dark. I was outside working on the shelter garden with my back to the sun. I spent part of the time watering the garden.
Other than avoiding the direct water from the hose  the animals carried on as usual. The birds were more interested in me than anything in the sky. The bees didn't leave the garden, at least not that I could see.
I didn't see any squirrels, but that is not unusual during the hottest part of the day.
It didn't get totally dark here so that might make a difference.

Yes at 70% it would just look like one of those overcast dark days to the animals perhaps?

But I was hearing of people who heard roosters crow, and some other animal did something it would normally do at night -but I have forgeotten what that was and can't find it again now!. But maybe they were in the path of totality.
Haha I bet those animals thought "Wow that was a short night. I feel like I hardly slept a wink!"

I have heard that roosters crow when the light returns.  A lot of animals wouldn't have much of a sense of how much time has passed so they would think it is a short night. A lot of people don't judge the passage of time well either.

The 70% was like an overcast day except that the light looked odd. There was an odd shadow effect. The sky was a strange colour. It wasn't blue exactly. It seemed more of a grey with greenish overtones.

In 2024 there will be a total eclipse in Canada so I will make a point of really observing what happens.
